Breathalyzer Test
A breathalyzer test estimates a person’s blood alcohol level by measuring how much alcohol has passed through the bloodstream and into the lungs. Some people have theories or ‘tricks’ on how to pass a breathalyzer test when they would normally fail. However, it is important to note that the ability to fool a breathalyzer test is a myth. Common myths on how to trick a breathalyzer include using breath mints, mouthwash or eating onion. None of these have ever been proven to help a person pass a breathalyzer test. In fact, mouthwash can produce the opposite result.
Most mouthwashes contain alcohol. Listerine, for example, contains 27% alcohol. If someone uses mouthwash and then immediately takes an alcohol breathalyzer test, they will likely fail. Several studies have shown mixed results on how long after a person uses mouthwash that a breathalyzer test can be accurate. One study showed that after two minutes the alcohol from the mouthwash had dissolved and did not affect the test. Another study showed that after eighteen minutes, a person’s alcohol content through the breathalyzer showed that they still had twice the lethal amount of alcohol in their system. That’s a reading of 0.81%! If you don’t want to produce a breathalyzer false positive, be aware of what you have consumed prior to taking the test. If you are given the test by law enforcement, inform them of what you have had to eat or drink that could affect the results before taking the test.
When someone asks how to pass a breathalyzer test, the first response is to never drink and drive. But if you decide to drive, you must be aware of how much alcohol you have consumed and know your blood alcohol content (BAC). Buying an inexpensive breathalyzer is one way of knowing if you are in the clear before getting behind the wheel.
There are many options when making your breathalyzer purchase. Whichever one you decide to purchase, be sure you know how to use it. While home breathalyzer tests tend to be less accurate than those used by law enforcement, they are also much more affordable. And remember, the most important part is that you use it!
