Dangers of Drinking and Driving
The dangers of drinking and driving aren’t always as obvious as auto accidents and physical injuries. Just as real and maybe more frightening result of drinking and driving is often that the inebriated driver has a false sense of well being.
The driver can frequently drink and then drive and not end up in an accident. This can lead to more frequent and less responsible driving in the future, which is when a higher percentage of more severe accidents occur. Repeat offenders are responsible for 93% of all drunk driving related deaths.
The penalties for drunk driving vary from state to state. Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) is lobbying for harsher and swifter punishment for first time offenders and repeat offenders. Currently, some of the penalties include fines, license suspension, jail time, revoking of license, court ordered treatment, interlock sentences and probation. All of these offenses would remain on an individual’s driving record as well.
Jail time is the most serious penalty an offender may receive. Prior to jail time, though, an offender would typically receive a fine, loss of driving privileges and then alcohol treatment.
It is becoming more common, since new laws passed in several states in 2001, to see offenders receive an interlock sentence. This type of sentence is when an actual locking mechanism (called a breath alcohol ignition interlock device) is placed on the offender’s vehicle so that it cannot be operated until a breath test is passed. This typically is administered with a specific end date enforced. These interlock devices can be purchased commercially, but are mostly found within the law enforcement arena.
A more progressive solution to what many call beer perspectives is to own or use a breathalyzer. A breathalyzer could be as simple as a $4 disposable version or as advanced as a multi-user wall unit which may or may not be coin-operated.
The dangers of drinking and driving are far too well known. Using an item such as a breathalyzer will likely become more common as penalties for drunk drivers become more severe.
