BreathKey Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between a fuel cell alcohol
sensor and a semiconductor alcohol sensor?
Breath Analyzer
The BreathKey is the only consumer breath analyzer to use a fuel cell alcohol sensor, the same type that is found in breathalyzers used by law enforcement. All other consumer breathalyzers use a semiconductor alcohol sensor.
Semiconductor sensors use a small ceramic bead heated up to a high temperature. When alcohol is present, the electrical resistance of the sensor changes and a circuit measures the change and converts it into a blood alcohol content (BAC) reading.
The advantage of semiconductor sensors is that they are very inexpensive to make. The disadvantages are that they use a lot of power, take time to warm up, are less stable over time, and can give false positive readings on a breath analyzer.
Fuel cell sensors generate a small current when alcohol is present. The current is converted by a circuit into a BAC reading.
The advantages of fuel cell sensors are that they use no power, are ready almost immediately, are more stable over time, and rarely give false positive readings. The usual disadvantage of fuel cell sensors is their cost; however, OmegaPoint has spent years developing its own patented fuel cell sensor technology that has resulted in a sensor that is significantly less expensive to make when compared to conventional fuel cell sensors, yet is reliable and accurate.
You won’t find this same technology in any other consumer product. While it’s relatively easy to find an alcohol breath analyzer, finding a high quality inexpensive breathalyzer may take some research. But nothing will come close to the technology that BreathKey offers. BreathKey is the only consumer breathalyzer with a fuel cell alcohol sensor, is the least expensive fuel cell breathalyzer of any kind on the market, and is the smallest breathalyzer in the world. BreathKey is a reliable breath analyzer for an inexpensive price.
