No Drinking and Driving

As often as you have heard “no drinking and driving,” you may have grown numb to that slogan.  Drinking and driving is not the only problem caused by alcohol though.  Alcohol can bring out the worst in people, tear families apart and be a contributing factor in much more serious crimes.

Did you know that fifty percent of homicides as well as forty percent of assaults in the United States are alcohol related? Research has also shown that alcohol is one of the major risk factors for violence in intimate relationships.  Alcohol causes a drinker’s emotions to become exaggerated, causing the happy to be happier and the angry to be angrier.  This impairment leads to poor decision making and acting out on those emotions in a way that the drinker would have not normally do sober.

Alcohol dependence is expensive, too.  Not only for the consumer who is purchasing the beverages but also for the taxpayers who are funding the rehabilitations and court costs.  In 2005, alcohol dependence and abuse cost the United States an estimated $220 billion, more than the cost associated with obesity or cancer.  These funds could be used to find a cure for cancer but instead are rehabilitating alcoholics.  Alcoholics certainly need rehabilitating, but it is important for ‘social drinkers’ to be aware of the warning signs so you don’t end up being the one needing help.

Drinking problems divide families.  According to recent studies, 53% of adults in the U.S.  have reported that at least one close relative has a drinking problem.  This statistic combined with the statistic showing that 74% of kids, ages 8-17, say their parents are the primary influence in their decisions about drinking puts kids at risk.  If a parent is a problem drinker, the child is much more likely to follow in their mom or dad’s footsteps.

These statistics are scary.  It is not just about ‘no drinking and driving’ anymore.  Your behavior affects those around you, especially if you have children.  Before you take the next drink, think about what you are teaching your kids.  If you recognize a problem, now is the time to reach out for help.
